'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' set to take franchise 'to a whole new level,' according to filmmakers
Spidey fans are headed for more excitement in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as the titular character is set to face adventures and obstacles that its filmmakers described to be "on a whole new level."
Since Spider-Verse became an Oscar-winning material and has since redefined what a CG-animated movie could look like, the creative team of Across the Spider-Verse made sure to up their visual ante by improving all that was good about the first film.
“We took everything that we did in the first movie and cranked it to a whole new level,” filmmaker Christopher Miller said in a press release.
“With this movie, we’re visiting different universes, and each universe has its own aesthetic and own artistic style. Each world is so different visually from the others, and the things that the people at Sony Pictures Animation and Imageworks have designed are limited by absolutely nothing. Anything you can imagine, paint and conceive, they can make an immersive 3D spectacle – and that’s often absolutely jaw-dropping.”
Producer Amy Pascal stressed that the film "is a lot bigger and will have all the action that everyone’s looking for," but that these heart-pumping sequences still come out of character development that's essential to tell a good story.
Across the Spider-Verse shines the spotlight on Miles Morales, a teenage graffiti artist who became the web-slinging hero of his universe after the death of his reality's Peter Parker. The sequel has him exploring a place called the Multiverse, where Miles meets more of his friendly neighborhood variations.
According to Peter Ramsey, one of the directors of the first film and now an executive producer for the sequel, he hopes that the new story will make audiences feel like "they’ve been reunited with a good friend."
"We want them to hold on tight as Miles goes through some really tricky and treacherous times. Most of all, I hope his journey comes across as powerfully and emotionally strong as it did in the original movie," Ramsey said.
Across the Spider-Verse serves as the sequel to 2018's Into the Spider-Verse, which was highly-acclaimed by critics due to its unique animation style that combines computer animation with hand-drawn comic book techniques. It eventually won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards.
The sequel will have Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac lending their voices to the characters.
The film will premiere in movie theaters in the Philippines this May 31.
