‘Shazam!’ director shares new costume designs for the supers

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg shared on his personal twitter account an image of the cast clad in their fresh costumes on set.

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods was revealed during the DC Fandome event last December 19, 2020.

According to Sandberg, the only real reason why he shared photos is to avoid its leaking.

The photo features Zacahry Levi as Billy Batson, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, and D.J Cotrona as Pedro Peña playing the six foster siblings in their adult superhero forms.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that the Shazam!—or adult costumed—version of Mary is now portrayed at the same time by Fulton, a role previously played by Michelle Borth.

Sandberg responded to the change in a tweet, saying, "Yes, Grace now plays both parts. But her hair and makeup is slightly different when she’s super so nobody will ever recognize her. Hey, it works for Wonder Woman!"

This makes sense, considering that Mary in the previous film was already college-aged and practically an adult. All of the superhero alter-egos are adult versions of the kids who wield the powers bestowed upon them by the six immortal elders: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.

Shazam! follows the story of Billy Batson and how he was recruited by the wizard Shazam to be his new champion.

In the first movie, Batson struggled to become the superhero he was meant to be, while Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) plotted to destroy the world by freeing the Seven Deadly Sins.

Its mid credits scene showed antagonist Sivana being approached by a talking caterpillar, also known as Mister Mind, proposing an alliance between the two.

DC and Warner Bros. have been mum on the plot of the sequel but many speculations from the title reveal said that Batson and his foster siblings might face Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, the six gods from whom they get their powers, the alliance of Sivana and Mister Mind or even the evil daughters of Atlas.

The 2019 film received positive reviews, grossed an estimated total of $366 million in ticket sales, and many fans lauded Zachary Levi for perfectly portraying the childish Billy Batson in adult form.

After the success of 2019s Shazam!, the sequel immediately went to production and is set to release on June 2, 2023.
