The first trailer for Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ is here

Marvel Studios has released the first official teaser trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, showing off the titular master of martial arts Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) making his live-action debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The studio shared the action-packed two-minute long trailer Monday (April 19) teasing a September release date.

Shang-Chi is a fictional superhero created by Marvel Comics in the 1970s as a response to the popularity of kung fu characters and themes on television at the time.

The upcoming film takes some inspiration from the more recent Shang-Chi series of comics, which sees the martial arts master trying to enjoy life in San Francisco away from mystical (and family) drama only for his old life to come crashing back.

The superhero is portrayed by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu, who is best known for his role as Jung Kim in Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience streaming on Netflix. The latest MCU film is the first Marvel film to have an all-Asian cast and predominantly Asian crew.

The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Ronny Chieng.

The trailer serves as an introduction to the character as he faces off against the mysterious Ten Rings organization and its true leader, the Mandarin. The Ten Rings have been a figure lurking in the background for the entirety of the MCU. The group was first introduced in 2008’s Iron Man (and spoofed by a copy-cat group in Iron Man 3), but Shang-Chi promises to reveal the actual group for the first time.

Alongside the trailer, Liu shared a first look at the brand new poster for the upcoming film across social media channels, which showcases Shang-Chi’s full superhero costume, as he celebrated his birthday. "We're almost there people," the actor exclaimed on Twitter.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers. David Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the screenplay for the film.

The MCU film is expected to be released in theaters on September 3, 2021.
