HBO drops first look footage of 'The Last of Us' series

HBO Max has just unveiled the first look footage of the series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s 2013 action and adventure video game The Last of Us.

The upcoming HBO series adaptation of the zombie apocalypse game stars former Game of Thrones actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, The Last of Us follows hardened survivor Joel as he tries to smuggle Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. Joel and Ellie's attempt to escape eventually becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as both depend on each other for survival.

In the teaser, Pedro Pascal’s Joel is seen with Bella Ramsey’s Ellie as they exchange a few lines that emphasize the drama that we can expect from the show. The scene holds resemblance to the ranch scene in the game where Ellie and Joel went through a heart-wrenching argument about loss.

As the teaser unveiled key scenes of the duo, Ellie can be heard saying, “Everybody I’ve cared for has either died or left me.” With Joel responding with, “You have no idea what loss is.”

Short glimpses can also be seen of Joel’s daughter Sarah Miller played by Nico Parker, Bill as Nick Offerman, and a haunting carcass of a clicker (a type of infected zombie) that looks stuck on a wall.

Take a look at the teaser by skipping to 1:40 in HBO Max’s line up for their upcoming shows. Besides the much anticipated series adaptation, other shows such as The Idol, Love and Death, His Dark Materials, and Succession were also introduced in the collection of teasers.

An official release date of the series has yet to be announced, but the series is expected to premiere sometime in 2023.

It was confirmed by writer and producer Craig Mazin that the first season of The Last of Us adaptation will have 10 episodes. Alongside Mazin is Neil Druckman, the writer and director of the game, who also stated that the adaptation will explore more on the key drama between Ellie and Joel.
