Diana Prince, our favorite Amazonian superhero, is officially coming back to the big screen for a third Wonder Woman movie.

Fresh from the Christmas Day premiere of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. has just confirmed that it has given the green light for proceeding work on ‘Wonder Woman 3.'

According to a report by entertainment website Variety, Gal Gadot will be returning to star in the lead role while director Patty Jenkins is tasked to write and direct Wonder Woman 3. Production for the third installment of the DC Comics franchise is expected to be fast-tracked.

“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” said Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich.

Wonder Woman 1984 arrived in select theaters and streamed on HBO Max on Dec. 25. Even though many opted to enjoy the film at home, the film managed to generate robust performance in ticket sales—considering the current pandemic landscape.

As of last weekend, Wonder Woman 1984 earned $16.7 million from 2,100 North American theaters, making it the best-performing film of the COVID-19 era. Abroad, the film managed to gross $19.4 million in 42 markets, and combined with US/Canada, Wonder Woman 1984 churned $36.1 million at the box office.

Meanwhile, HBO Max claimed that nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers watched the film on Christmas, while others watched through cable or wireless access. HBO Max currently has 12.6 million active users.

"Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend. During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.” said WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer business head Andy Forssell.

The studio is still tight-lipped on details about the final chapter in the Wonder Woman trilogy. In the meantime, fans can expect to see Gadot’s Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s four-part cut of Justice League that streams on HBO Max in 2021.
