Bruce Willis is back as John McClane in new 'Die Hard'-themed ad

By Kara Santos Published Oct 19, 2020 4:34 am

The internet was abuzz when Bruce Willis popped up in a short teaser with the hashtag #DieHardisBack, implying a possible return of John McClane.

A 15-second teaser was posted on Twitter by his daughter, Rumer Willis, showing Bruce walking down a foggy street to the sound of someone whistling. The text in the teaser reads: "As one story ends, a new one begins" followed by an Oct. 18, 2020 date, and the hashtag #DieHardIsBack and #ad.

Fans on Twitter speculated that the ad was for a new Die Hard film in the works or a possible spin-off TV series starring Willis.

Andy Samberg's music group The Lonely Island retweeted the first teaser with the caption "Tell your dad we still want him to be on B99!" It would be amazing to see a crossover event on Brooklyn Nine-Nine that involves Jake Peralta meeting John McClane.

As it turns out, the teaser was an ad for .... Die Hard car batteries?!

The full 2-minute commercial posted by Advance Auto Parts sees Bruce Willis reprising his role as legendary hero John McClane racing the clock to install a new car battery. Yippee ki-yay!

The action-packed commercial references previous Die Hard movies with all the classic McClane snark. In the ad, Willis escapes through a vent, reunites with old friends and foes, beats someone over the head with a Die Hard-branded car battery, and drives away from an explosion without looking back.

Because we all know cool guys don't look at explosions.

The ad features cameos from De’voreaux White, who played limousine driver Argyle from the 1988 blockbuster and Clarence Gilyard Jr. as Die Hard bad guy, adding to the nostalgia factor.

Check out the full commercial below.

The ad debuted Sunday (Oct.18) during Fox's America’s Game of the Week telecast of Green Bay vs. Tampa Bay and was created in part due to October being National Car Care Month.
