Kakao Entertainment denied reports about the cancelation of the upcoming drama series Unexpected Country Diary on Sept. 15, calling reports “groundless.”

As per Sports Donga, JTBC reported, “The production of the Kakao TV’s drama Unexpected Country Diary, where Jang Geun-Seok and Choi Soo-Young will work together, has completed casting of the main character(s) and is about to be filmed…However, the production was ultimately canceled due to various circumstances.”

But Kakao Entertainment clarified, “It is not true that production plans have fallen through. We are preparing to film during the spring and summer of next year.”

They also revealed that they made casting offers to actors Jang Keun Suk and Choi Sooyoung, “but it was ultimately decided that they will not be starring in the drama. We are currently in the process of casting actors.”

Jang Geun-Seok's agency, AG Corporation, confirmed on July 8 that he did receive an offer to appear in the drama. On Aug. 2, Choi Soo-Young's agency, Saram Entertainment, confirmed that she would join Jang Geun-Seok to star in the series.

Unexpected Country Diary is a romance drama based on the eponymous webtoon by Park Ha-Min. It’s about a Seoul-based veterinarian named Han Ji-Yool who is thrown into a rural village and meets a female police officer named Ahn Ja-Young.

The drama was supposed to be Jang Geun Seok's return project after he was discharged from mandatory military service in June 2020. His last K-drama was the 2018 comedy series Switch: Change the World, where he played genius con manSo Do-Chan.

For Choi Soo-Young, it was to be her new project since So, I Married an Anti-Fan, which aired from April 30 to June 19 this year.
