Nintendo Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. now available in the Philippines
Some good news for old-school and retro gamers. The Nintendo Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. edition is now available in the Philippines.
The nostalgic handheld gaming system was launched internationally during the celebration of Super Mario Bros.' 35th anniversary on Nov. 13, and is available in local stores.
The original Game & Watch device came out in Japan in 1980 as the first handheld gaming system created by Nintendo. The special 2020 edition of the device includes the original Super Mario Bros. game, a digital clock, and more.
The gaming system sports the colored version of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, which features hidden courses of the game. It also comes with an exclusive Game & Watch Ball game.
The handheld console allows players to jump over bottomless pits, stomp Goombas, and enter warp pipes with the same tight controls from the classic game of the '80s. Relive the nostalgia as a solo player or enjoy the game with others via two-player mode.
When players are not saving the Mushroom Kingdom, they can use the gaming system as a retro digital clock, which comes with up to 35 animations and special appearances from Mario’s friends and foes.
According to specs, the latest Game & Watch console weighs 0.15 lbs, and is 12.5mm thick. It’s rechargeable for up to three and a half hours via USB Type-C while play time lasts up to eight hours.
Local retailers Datablitz, Game One, i.Tech, and GameXtreme have priced the special edition locally at P5,795. Each unit of the gaming system comes with a USB AC Adapter (for a limited time depending on the store).
Readers were quick to comment on the gadget's pricing, which is more than double the product’s global price tag of $49.99. Given current dollar exchange rates, the handheld was expected to cost less than P2,500.
However, other factors may have gone into the setting of the gadget's local price, considering importation costs, shipping, and limited supply.
