The Uncharted film starring Tom Holland and The Last of Us television series coming to HBO Max are "just the beginning" of Sony's PlayStation push beyond games into the world of film and television, the company announced.

In a video to mark the beginning of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan announced that the two upcoming video game adaptations heralds a new era of integration into other non-gaming platforms.

"We're also really thrilled to bring some of the best PlayStation IP to new media like film and television," Ryan stated during his brief CES 2021 video.

The Uncharted movie, starring Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan based on Naughty Dog’s iconic adventure franchise is set to be released in theaters on July 16, 2021.

As for HBO's The Last of Us adaptation, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) is attached in addition to Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann, and the show is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, the first television series for the brand.

“This is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences. Sony is a creative entertainment company, and entertainment has never been more important," Ryan added.

According to IGN, Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra previously revealed in late December 2020 that the studio had been actively developing 10 video game adaptations, including seven TV shows and three movies based on PlayStation properties, though he didn't specify whether the Uncharted film and The Last of Us TV series were included in that count.

What else could be in the works at Sony in terms of future film and television projects? A God of War blockbuster action movie? A Horizon Zero Dawn epic adventure series? Maybe a family-friendly educational show aimed at kids featuring Sackboy? Who would play Kratos or Aloy in any potential adaptations? It's an exciting time for gamers everwyhere and we can't wait to hear about new developments.

PlayStation’s announcement and video presentation ended with an exciting sizzle reel of some of the upcoming video games we can expect in 2021.

As reported by TechRadar, upcoming PS5 first-party exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West are still slated for 2021. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is due to be released in March, Little Devil Inside arrives in June, Solar Ash is set for July, while Ghostwire Tokyo and the long-awaited Stray are both scheduled for October 2021.
