The director of the Insidious, Conjuring and Saw franchises is returning to his dark horror roots as the first look at his newest project, Malignant, is released today.

Wan was the director of the DCEU film Aquaman, and is currently working on its sequel. He expressed his desire to do a movie during the free time he had in-between the two blockbuster films in an exclusive interview with IGN.

“I wanted to make a movie in between those two giant films, which, just something smaller, more intimate, and really harken back to the style of filmmaking or the kind of films that excited me when I was when much younger, when I was a teen growing up, idolizing filmmakers like De Palma, Argento, and all that,” he said.

"I just thought, 'When am I ever going to get the chance to do a film like this ever again? Now is the time for me to use this opportunity to make the kind of movies that I don't think really get made at this level anymore,'" Wan added.

The movie follows the story of Madison Mitchell (played by Annabelle Wallis) as she discovers more about the violent visions that she experiences which are actually real-time murders happening. And with the classic James Wan twist, the killer seems to be her childhood imaginary friend.

Wallis will be joined by her co-stars Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie, Mckenna Grace, and Maddie Hasson while the story is written by Wan, Akela Cooper, and Ingrid Bisu.

Bisu also worked with Wan in The Nun and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It.

Malignant will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max starting September 10.
