Sailor Moon: Eternal 2021 movie drops first trailer

It’s been years since the anime Sailor Moon Crystal graced screens, and avid fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the classy heroines. Now, they have a reason to celebrate.

The long-awaited two-part Sailor Moon film has confirmed its release dates next year. This two-part film marks 25 years since the movie Sailor Moon Super S The Movie: The 9 Sailor Soldiers Unite! Miracle of the Black Dream Hole! that was released in Japanese theaters back in 1995.

The first part, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie, has just confirmed its premiere spot in Japanese theaters for Jan. 8, 2021. The film was originally slated for Sep. 11, 2020, but was re-scheduled due to the pandemic.

The second part is set to follow soon after, on Feb. 11, 2020.

Here’s the synopsis:

A solar eclipse suddenly happens in the month of April. As the moon covers the sun, Usagi and Chibiusa meet a Pegasus named Helios, who's looking for two "chosen maidens" to help break the seal of the Golden Crystal. He appears in Chibiusa's dream one day and says "I want you to help me". At the same time, a mysterious group called the Dead Moon Circus appears in Juban. Their goal is to scatter nightmare incarnations called Lemures across the world, obtain the Legendary Silver Crystal, rule the Earth and Moon, and later the universe. Chibiusa, who was called a "maiden" by Helios, is developing feelings for him. Mamoru distances himself from Usagi, as he will put her in danger because of him.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie is directed by Chiaki Kon, written by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, chief supervised by Naoko Takeuchi, and produced by both Toei Animation and Studio Deen.

The film features the voices of Kotono Mitsuishi (Usagi Tsukino/Super Sailor Moon), Ryo Hirohashi (Luna), Kenji Nojima (Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask), Hisako Kanemoto (Ami Mizuno/Super Sailor Mercury), Rina Sato (Rei Hino/Super Sailor Mars), Ami Koshimizu (Makoto Kino/Super Sailor Jupiter), Shizuka Ito (Minako Aino/Super Sailor Venus), Taishi Murata (Artemis), Misato Fukuen (Chibiusa/Super Sailor Chibi Moon), Shoko Nakagawa (Diana), Ai Maeda (Setsuna Meioh/Super Sailor Pluto), Junko Minagawa (Haruka Tenoh/Super Sailor Uranus),Sayaka Ohara (Michiru Kaioh/Super Sailor Neptune), Yukiyo Fujii (Hotaru Tomoe/Super Sailor Saturn) and Pegasus/Helios (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka).

The new Sailor Moon movie premieres Jan. 8, 2021 at the Japanese box office. No word yet on the global release schedule.
