Netflix has announced that its popular fantasy series The Witcher is getting a spinoff series.

The upcoming project - called The Witcher: Blood Origin - is a six-part live-action series that will take place 1200 years before the time of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia and will explore the events that led to the ‘conjunction of spheres’, a period where “worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be.”

Netflix said that Declan de Barra will take on the showrunner duties while Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will act as an executive producer. As of this writing, Netflix hasn't revealed any information about the cast of the series or when it will be released.

The film production of Netflix's popular fantasy drama series was put on hold in March due to fears over the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the streaming service in a Twitter post said that the production restart of The Witcher will resume on August 17.

"I’m dusting off my lute and quill, I have some news, some mead to spill: After all the months we’ve been apart It’s time for production to restart. The Witcher and his bard – who’s flawless, Will reunite on set 17 August," it said.
