Tim Burton to direct live-action TV series Addams Family spin-off 'Wednesday'

Here's some good news for your mid-week blues. Director Tim Burton is set to direct a series spin-off of The Addams Family.

Netflix announced last Wednesday (Feb. 18), that its platform has ordered a new live-action series focusing on the lovably twisted Wednesday Addams and her adventures at Nevermore Academy to be helmed by director Tim Burton.

The director, known for his quirky style that draws on elements of the macabre, is best known for his gothic fantasy and horror films such as Beetlejuice (1998), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), Dark Shadows (2012), and more.

"Tim Burton is bringing Wednesday Addams to Netflix in a live-action coming-of-age series! Burton will also make his TV directorial debut on the sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery that follows Wednesday as a student at Nevermore Academy," the streamer posted on their Twitter account along with a teaser poster for the upcoming project.

The eight episode offshoot of The Addams Family marks Tim Burton's television directorial debut. Al Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of Smallville, spearhead the series as showrunners, and are set to executive produce alongside Burton.

According to the official plot description, the series is a "sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore."

A coming-of-age series focusing on the unconventional and edgy teenage daugther of the spooky satirical 20th-century American family seems right up Burton's alley. The director also previously developed and executive produced an animated Beetlejuice series that ran from 1989-1991.

The character of Wednesday Addams was famously played by Christina Ricci in the feature film The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel Addams Family Values (1993) directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

No release date or casting news has been announced yet for the new live-action series Wednesday on Netflix.
