Japanese manga artist Masashi Kishimoto, series creator of the epic ninja adventure Naruto, will soon be making a comeback to replace retiring Ukyo Udachi, the story writer behind the Boruto manga, anime, and film.

The announcement was made on the Naruto: Boruto official Twitter account and was widely re-tweeted by fans worldwide afterwards. The tweet said that the change was “planned from the beginning.” On Twitter, Kodachi also thanked fans for following his work on the manga until now.

According to a report by otaku website Anime News Network, Kishimoto will be assuming the writing duties after Kodachi’s retirement from the manga. Kishimoto officially takes over the role starting with Chapter 52 that will be published in the December issue of V Jump magazine on Nov. 21.

It can be remembered that Kodachi and Mikio Ikemoto launched the Boruto sequel manga in Weekly Shonen Jump back in May 2016, running monthly before transferring to Shueisha's V Jump magazine in July 2019. Outside Japan, Viz Media is publishing the Boruto manga both in digital and print.

Meanwhile, the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo in April 2017. Since then, the anime has been airing via Crunchyroll and other streaming services.

Boruto is the next-gen spin-off of the original Naruto manga, Kishimoto’s 15-year masterpiece that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump in Sept. 1999, and ended Nov. 2014. The ninja-themed story has spawned multiple anime, anime films, OVAs, and even several game adaptations.
