Even if it hasn’t been confirmed that Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead will be renewed for season two, director Lee Jaekyoo revealed that the series was intentionally produced for a possible expansion.
In an exclusive report by The Korea Herald, Jaekyoo said he hopes the series will be renewed for season two. “Many directions, settings, and scenes were intentionally produced to expand the story into an additional season, including the introduction of the new races of zombies—immune and immortal.”
The final episode of All of Us Are Dead revolves around the student survivors reuniting with half-human, half-zombie—or halfbie—Namra (Cho Yihyun) in the ruins of Hyosan High School. They soon discover that she’s been training other zombies who are just like her.
To recall, halfbies are unique species of zombies who have super-human abilities and can control their hunger. Aside from Namra, Gwinam (Yoo Insoo), and Eunji (Oh Hyesoo) are also halfbies since they’ve survived near-death encounters throughout the series.
Cheongsan (Yoon Chanyoung), Nam Onjo (Park Jihoo), Lee Byeongchan (Kim Byungchul), and Ms. Park (Lee Sanghee) are speculated to be halfbies by fans as well.
Jaekyoo said if All of Us Are Dead will be renewed for season two, the storyline can focus on the survival of the zombies instead.
“If the first season can be seen as having presented humanity‘s survival, the next season can talk about the survival of zombies. I hope to present viewers with another season,” Jaekyoo said.
The director also shared that the Jonas virus, which was the origin of the zombie apocalypse in the series, is meant to highlight people who don’t take responsibility in real life.
“The origin of zombie virus was introduced in the series as an attempt to highlight the people who take responsibility and those who do not when an event, such as school violence, occurs. Though it is another zombie action thriller, I thought the series provides the viewers with a chance to think about what kind of people they are,” Jaekyoo said.
Based on the popular webtoon, All of Us Are Dead starring Yoon Chanyoung, Park Jihoo, Cho Yihyun, and Park Solomon tells the story of high school students who are forced to survive a zombie apocalypse with their own survival skills.
The K-drama made history after being the fourth non-English series to top Netflix’s weekly official chart following Squid Game, Hellbound, and The Silent Sea.
