Spoilers ahead!

Natalia Dyer who plays Nancy Wheeler on Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things has been portraying the fan-favorite character since the first season came out in 2016.

Throughout the past four seasons, her character has always been stuck between her male love interests Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton).

In the first season, she initially had eyes for Steve as their romantic relationship evolved up until her best friend Barb passed away. From this tragedy, their relationship crumbled and she saw Jonathan in a new light. They eventually ended up getting together as the new couple in season 2.

In the latest season, Nancy and Jonathan are seen to be in a long-distance relationship that has caused tension and unresolved problems. With Jonathan out of Hawkins, Nancy is forced to work with the Harrington gang to save the town. As they spend a lot of time with one another, Steve later confesses to her that he envisions a future with her.

In season 4’s final episode when Jonathan returns, the couple seems to be distant from each other.

The actress shared her thoughts in a new interview on Variety released Monday, July 4, about the complicated relationship her character has between the two leading men.

“It’s really tough. I don’t know. It feels like she’s been in a relationship for a while so maybe she needs some self discovery time,” Dyer said.

“It’s a bit complicated. Whatever happens, I would hope that she does it with integrity. I personally had some crunchy feelings about how the whole Jonathan thing started sort of behind Steve’s back. I can’t believe she did that. I mean, I can,” she added.

The 27-year-old actress believes that Steve and Nancy have both grown as indivuals since they were first linked together as a couple in the earlier seasons.

“What this season touches on is the fact that these two people do care about each other and that hasn’t gone away. What that is and what label you want to put on that, I don’t know, but we see these characters meeting again after growing up and going through life with it,” Dyer said. “So that was really lovely to play. It was really fun and touching. Truly, I have no idea where it’s gonna go but I do like that they at least still care about each other,” she added.

She also added that Nancy’s choices will be with the best intentions.

“I just think she’s stronger now. I think she’s more sure of herself. So whatever she decides to do, she’ll do it for the right reasons.”

Stranger Things Season 4 Vol. 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
