Nintendo has revealed that Minecraft’s Steve and Alex are joining the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. The iconic duo, along with their alternate skins Enderman and Zombie, will be part of the second Fighters Pass Vol. 2 which includes Arms’ Min Min. Four characters have yet to be revealed in the downloadable content.

In typical Minecraft fashion, Steve and Alex can wield swords, picks, and bombs as well as build blocks around their enemies while fighting in the arena. During the character reveal, game director Masahiro Sakurai explained that bringing the characters of Microsoft's popular building simulation game posed some challenges like adjusting the game’s balance and the fighter’s physical attacks.

“The plan for the fighter is easy to create. The graphics should also be straightforward. The motion is relatively simple, and the sound is comparable to other fighters,” Sakurai  said. “What’s difficult, however, is the programming work required to bring the character to life. It’s a massive challenge. Plus, we have to rework all our existing stages so that blocks can be placed in them.”

“Bringing Minecraft to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the result of an amazing collaboration with Nintendo” Mojang Studios chief creative Officer Jens Bergensten said. “As fans of the series and avid players at our studios, we couldn’t be more excited to see Minecraft join Smash’s already legendary lineup of characters.”

Nintendo said that Sakurai will reveal more details about the newest fighters of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate including its release date on October 3 at 10:30 p.m. (PST).
