Zack Snyder has revealed that Jared Leto’s Joker will sport a new look in his upcoming cut of Justice League for HBO Max.

During an interview over Beyond the Trailer, Snyder confirmed that the appearance of Leto’s version of the Clown Prince of Crime in the Director’s Cut will be different compared to his look in 2016’s Suicide Squad.

“I wanted to of course honor what had been created with him because I thought it was really cool but I also felt like… I’m not gonna tell you what happens in the little scene but some water has gone under the proverbial bridge between when last we saw Joker and this sort of appearance. So yeah, he’s made some… he’s a road-weary Joker… I guess that’s a way of saying it,” Snyder said.

Beyond the Trailer host Grace Randolph, who shared during the interview the she has seen the villain’s new look, told Snyder that his take on Leto’s appearance in the upcoming film is “video game level good,” adding that it would be a “strong contender” if the director decides to do a spin-off of the film.

“You only showed me stills, black and white stills but they are so amazing. This Joker… your design I would say is video game level good. And when people see it in the context… they’re going to go nuts. My lips are sealed is what you showed me but I would say that if you have the opportunity to do a spin-off… that this from what I’ve seen… this would be a strong contender,” Randolph explained.

As for calling Leto back to reprise his role, Snyder said, “He was really gracious with entertaining my idea and I told him that it was a thing that I had felt like even when I was working on Justice League in London… I felt like [it] was an inevitable course that the movie had to take and so when I told him that it was a thing that I’ve been kicking around in my head for quite a while, I feel like he just kind of sort of warmed up to this idea that It’s kind of an inevitable thing that kind of have to happen. I am grateful and I am forever in debt to his kindness.”

The director also described Leto as "amazing," saying that his attention to detail shows how "he really cares a lot about it being awesome." Snyder added that it was "fun having a segment of the band together for this little vignette."

News that Leto is reprising his role came as a surprise to everyone considering that his character did not appear in 2017’s Justice League. Leto’s stint as the Joker in the DCEU ended briefly after he was replaced by Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker.

There’s still no word yet on how the iconic DC villain will fit into the storyline of Snyder’s four-hour long film, which premieres on HBO Max in 2021.
