Amazon Prime has unveiled the first trailer for The Wheel of Time television series, an upcoming adaptation of Robert Jordan’s series of high fantasy novels ahead of its Nov. 19 release date.

The novels, first published in 1990, spanned 15 books in addition to a prequel novel and two companion books. As of 2017, the series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide, and it is considered one of the best selling epic fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings.

Amazon first announced that it had greenlit the series in 2018, but production was delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Wheel of Time is just one part of Amazon’s plans for a big-budget fantasy adaptation to try and succeed as the heir to Game of Thrones.

Amazon is also working on a new The Lord of the Rings series that is shaping up to be one of the most expensive TV shows ever made, which will debut on Sept. 2, 2022.

The first trailer for The Wheel of Time sets the stage for the TV adaptation, establishing the main characters in Jordan’s world, with a specific focus on Moiraine Damodred portrayed by Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike and the sprawling, epic world where only certain women are allowed to wield magic.

Moiraine is a member of an incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, capable of wielding the One Power to control elements and heal others. The story follows Moiraine as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers where she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

The trailer also shows off a glimpse at The Wheel of Time’s younger cast: Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, and Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor—the five central characters in Jordan’s books who Moiraine ends up mentoring as they journey to save the world from darkness.

The teaser trailer opens with a voiceover by Moiraine as a series of scenes play out including shots of Shadar Logoth, the attack of Trollocs and Myrddraal on the Two Rivers and Aes Sedai using the One Power.
