Are Cairo and Gavreel breaking up? 'Gameboys: The Movie' announces July 30 release date

After several months of waiting, fans of the acclaimed Pinoy Boys’ Love series Gameboys can finally rest easy as film and TV production firm The IdeaFirst Company announced the release date of the show’s continuation.

During the show’s World Gameboys Day on Saturday, May 22, an online event that commemorates the series’  premiere last year, it was announced that Gameboys: The Movie will be released on July 30.

The movie will be streamed on streaming series KTX.ph.

The trailer for Gameboys: The Movie was also released yesterday. And it seems the movie will make fans cry for their beloved Gameboys characters

Gameboys: The Movie continues where the show’s first season left off. The show’s first season saw Gavreel (Kokoy De Santos) and Cairo (Elijah Canlas) turn from rivals to friends to lovers—and the movie, based on the trailer, will show what will happen next in their romance.

The trailer shows Gavreel and Cairo spending time at the latter’s home, with new character Susan (Angie Castrence) seemingly trying to question and break their relationship.

“Umpisa pa lang naman kasi alam ko namang hiram lang itong oras na magkasama tayo,” Cairo can be heard saying.

Adrianna So, Kyle Velino, Miggy Jimenez and Kych Minemoto are also part of the cast. The film is directed by Ivan Andrew Payawal and written by Ash Malanum.

The IdeaFirst Company’s Perci Intalan also announced that the show’s second season will premiere later this year, after the release of the movie.

“Sinusundan niya ang isang storyline na malinaw na kinalakhan natin sa ‘Gameboys’ one. Kwento ni Cairo at ni Gavreel at kung ano ‘yung nangyari. Pero ang dami pang kwento at ‘yun yung makikita mo sa season two,” he said.

The show’s first season will also be aired on GMA’s Heart of Asia channel starting June 13.

The first season of Gameboys is currently streaming on Netflix.

Gameboys is one of the many Boys Love shows that were produced by local production companies last year, following Thai BL shows such as Tharntype and 2gether that gained popularity during government-imposed lockdowns amid the pandemic.

It is considered to be the first Boys Love produced by a Filipino production, and easily the most successful.

“It was a bold decision to chart new territory in the middle of a pandemic, especially for a company that doesn’t really have a lot of reserves. Perhaps, we were just lucky. This pandemic hit our company when it just had enough to stay afloat, and just had the right size and speed to turn the wheel quickly without tipping over. We never even bothered calculating the chances of success. We just knew by instinct that we needed to find a way out of this storm — until we saw the clouds starting to part and once again found our north star,” Intalan wrote the Philippine Star in July last year.
