A new trailer for Morbius starring Jared Leto as the vampiric anti-hero from the Marvel comics has just dropped.

The upcoming film in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters is set for release on Jan. 28, 2022 in the US and "exclusively in cinemas soon" in the Philippines.

Jared Leto stars as Michael Morbius, a doctor suffering from a rare blood disorder, who undergoes his own experimental treatment that only manages to unleash his inner darkness and thirst for blood.

Aside from Leto, the movie also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal with Tyrese Gibson.

Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa from a story and screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless based on the Marvel comics.

The film, which was supposed to be released earlier this year was delayed to the Halloween season, before being pushed back further to a 2022 release.

The movie comes from the same studio as Spider-Man: Far from Home and Venom.

The film is the on-screen adaptation of Morbius the Living Vampire who first appeared in 1971’s Amazing Spider-Man #101.

Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, Morbius clashed with Spider-Man several times in the comics, before starring in his own comic book series as a Marvel anti-hero.

The new trailer is filled with lots of Marvel Easter eggs including a cameo by Michael Keaton a.k.a. Adrian Toomes/Vulture, a building with the OsCorp logo, a shot of the Daily Bugle newspaper with mentions of Rhino and Black Cat, as well as a shot of a graffiti-scrawled wall with Spider-Man.

Morbius also manages to namedrop "Venom" at the end of the trailer.

If the music in the trailer sounds familiar, it's set to a haunting version of The Doors "People are Stange," previously used in the classic 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys.

This isn't Leto's first time playing an iconic comic book character. He previously portrayed DC's Joker in Suicide Squad in 2016.

A day before the trailer's release, Leto shared his thoughts on playing Dr. Michael Morbius, his powerful alter-ego, straight from the 50th anniversary of his Marvel comic debut to his first ever big screen appearance in a short vignette.
