Emmy Awards 2020: Complete List of Winners and Nominees

For the first time ever in its 72-year history, the Primetime Emmy Awards, which honors the best in television, was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Broadcast on ABC on Sunday, September 20 (US Time) the event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel did not involve any of the usual glitzy red carpet moments and long drawn-out speeches on stage. 

Instead, the socially distanced “Pandemmys” had Kimmel speaking in front of empty seats at the Staples Center and video-chats with over a hundred nominees, who were sent camera kits so they could broadcast from their homes.

Candian sitcom Schitt’s Creek won “Outstanding Comedy Series” and swept all four comedy acting categories with Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy taking home the trophies. The series, created by the father and son Levy tandem, follows the formerly filthy-rich Rose family who are forced to live in a motel in a small town they once bought as a joke.

HBO’s Watchmen, an American superhero drama based on the 1986 DC Comics series created by Alan Moore, bagged four of the seven honors including “Outstanding Limited Series” award along with acting nods for lead actress Regina King (Angela Abar/Sister Night) and supporting actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Calvin “Cal” Abar). Jeremy Irons was also nominated for his portrayal of Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias.

The satirical comedy drama series Succession won “Outstanding Drama Series” with Jeremy Strong taking home the lead actor win for portraying second son Kendall Roy. The series follows the Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco and their troubles following the decline in health of family patriarch Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox).

Netflix snagged a directing win for the German-American miniseries  Unorthodox which follows a Jewish woman living in an unhappy arranged marriage in an ultra-Orthodox community. Hulu won an acting award for Mrs. America, a historical miniseries that dramatizes the story of the  Equal Rights Amendment movement in America and the unexpected backlash in the 1970s.

The unusually staged awards night marks the first major entertainment industry ceremony to air since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Aside from being a night to celebrate entertainment on television, some of the winners used the virtual ceremony to raise awareness on current and political events, urging viewers to register and vote on November in their speeches. Additionally, nominees and winners dressed down, trading in the usual formal wear of gowns and suits for designer pajamas and t-shirts with slogans like “Vote,” “Remember Her Name” and “Black Lives Matter.”
