'We Can Be Heroes' gets sequel order after record-setting holiday debut

It looks like the next generation of superheroes will be suiting up again sooner than you think. 

Just a couple of weeks after its release on Christmas Day, Robert Rodriguez's Netflix superhero kid film We Can Be Heroes has already been snapped up for a sequel.

In a tweet posted Tuesday (Jan. 5), Netflix confirmed the breaking news that a follow-up to the spinoff of the 2005 film The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D and the Spy Kids franchise, is already in development.

"And breaking news: a WE CAN BE HEROES sequel is in development from writer-director Robert Rodriguez!" Netflix announced on Twitter sharing recent viewership figures for hit holiday shows.   

As reported by Deadline, the sequel announcement comes after the impressive debut of the superhero flick on the streamer on Friday, Dec. 25. According to figures from the streaming platform, 44 million households tuned in to watch We Can Be Heroes over the holidays, and the film reached No. 1 on its kids overall list in 88 countries.

Robert Rodriguez, who wrote, directed and produced the 2020 film, will be back for the sequel.

We Can Be Heroes centers on tween Missy Moreno (YaYa Gosselin), who is determined to rescue her super-powered dad Marcus Moreno (The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal) and the rest of Earth’s grown-up superheroes who’ve been kidnapped by aliens. In order to the save the day, she and the other superkids will need to work together using their unique powers to break out of their secret government safe house run by the mysterious Ms. Granada (Priyanka Chopra Jonas).

The film also stars Taylor Dooley, who reprises her role as Lavagirl; JJ Dashnaw, who replaces Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy; and Christian Slater as Tech-No, a technologically gifted superhero.

Netflix figures also revealed that the steamy period drama Bridgerton was projected to be streamed by 63 million households since dropping at the same time on Christmas Day, raising hopes among subscribers for possible sequels as well.

The high viewership from both shows, among other holiday offerings, made it the biggest viewing week between Christmas and New Year's ever, according to Netflix.
