‘Street Fighter 6’ officially announced by Capcom

Capcom has officially announced that Street Fighter 6 is in development.

As teased through a mysterious countdown website that unlocked on Monday, Feb. 21, Capcom revealed Street Fighter 6 following the end of the Capcom Pro Tour fighting game exhibition.

Street Fighter 6 will be the first new numbered entry in Capcom's hit fighting game series since Street Fighter V debuted back in 2016. That entry faced criticisms at launch for a lack of content, but Capcom did support Street Fighter V by releasing multiple new characters, costumes, and modes after its release.

The announcement for Street Fighter 6 coincided with the 35th anniversary of the franchise in 2022.

Originally released in arcades on Aug. 30, 1987, the original Street Fighter revolutionized fighting games and has turned into a globally recognizable brand, with the video game portion of the franchise alone recording 47 million units sold globally as of September 2021.

Not much has been revealed about the next chapter in the long-running fighting game franchise, but Capcom promised that more updates will come this summer.

The short teaser trailer shows a beefed-up Ryu as he faces Luke, the 45th and final character for Street Fighter V who was teased to be in the sequel.

In honor of the franchise's 35th anniversary, Capcom also announced the Capcom Fighting Collection, an anthology of 10 classic titles including the full Darkstalkers series.

The Capcom Fighting Collection will include:

  • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
  • Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
  • Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire
  • Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers’ Revenge (First official release in North America)
  • Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire (First official release in North America)
  • Red Earth (First release outside of arcades)
  • Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness
  • Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Hyper Street Fighter II

The Capcom Fighting Collection will be released on June 24, 2022, for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Xbox One.
