'Deadpool 3' moves forward at Marvel Studios

Deadpool 3 is finally moving forward at Disney with Ryan Reynolds set to reprise his role as the wisecracking mercenary. This comes after Marvel Studios reportedly hired Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin to pen the script for the next R-rated superhero film.

As reported by Deadline, Reynolds met with a handful of writers over the past month to hear their story ideas for the next Marvel film. After several writers meetings, the actor and the studio have agreed to recruit the Molyneux sisters in the end for pitching an idea that is “perfect fit for what they wanted.”

Although the film is in its early stages, Deadline noted that the hiring of the Molyneux sisters is considered as a “first major step in getting the next Deadpool film into production.” The scripts of the first two films were penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

The Molyneux sisters won an Emmy for Bob’s Burgers in 2017 and have also been nominated for eight consecutive years for their work on the animated series. The pair are also co-creators of Fox’s animated series The Great North.

The first two Deadpool films are the highest-grossing X-Men movies of all time. In 2016, the first film earned $783 million while the 2018 sequel brought in $785 million worldwide. Despite the franchise’s global success, however, the fate of the third film has been in limbo ever since Disney’s acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox, which produced the first two movies.

Since the merger, fans were concerned that Deadpool’s crass tone would be watered down under the new studio’s stewardship. But Disney’s Bob Iger previously assured fans that the studio will continue making R-rated Deadpool movies.

“We do believe there is room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content, meaning that we see that there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films for instance,” Iger said.

He added, “We're going to continue in that business, and there might be room for more of that. And there's nothing that we've really seen in the Fox either library or in the activities that Fox is engaging in today from a standards perspective that would be of concern to us, as long as we're very carefully branding them and making sure that we're not in any way confusing the consumer with product that would be sort of either Disney products or the more traditional Marvel product”

There’s no word yet on the release date of Deadpool 3 or when the film will go into production.
