Universal films to arrive on Amazon streaming services

Amazon sealed a multi-year licensing deal with Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) which will bring the studio’s titles to Prime Video and IMDb TV.

Beginning with the 2022 releases, Prime Video will have an exclusive pay-one for Comcast Corp.-owned Universal films for 10 months including Jurassic World: Dominion, after its theatrical release and a four-month run on Peacock. The films will then return to Peacock for another four months, as announced by Comcast Corp. last week.

In a separate window, Prime Video will house Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru and DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys as well as Get Out and several franchises like Jurassic Park and Fast & Furious.

Additionally, the free and ad-supported streaming service IMDb TV has secured an exclusive network window for previous UFEG films with 2020 and 2021 theatrical releases which include The Invisible Man, F9, and Sing 2 as well as rights to some animated titles like Illumination’s Despicable Me 2 and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Shrek 2.

Amazon appears to be strengthening its streaming services in a highly competitive industry. The deal may also help boost the subscriber base of Peacock, which launched last year. Through these deals, studios are able to maximize both third parties and their own streaming services.

Last month, Amazon signed a deal with Comcast Corp-owned NBCUniversal to land Peacock on Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire tablet in the US.
