Golden Globes to include non-English language, animated features for best motion pictures

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced revisions in the eligibility guidelines for future Golden Globe Award shows and events.

Non-English language and animated motion pictures will be eligible to compete for the best motion picture awards for drama and musical or comedy, given that they meet the eligibility requirements. This will not be until the undated award show resumes.

Last May, US television network NBC canceled the 2022 Golden Globes after ethics and diversity complaints. Prior to the decision, HFPA said over an Instagram post in March that the organization will undergo “transformational change.” It was again announced in May.

In recent years, the Golden Globes have received backlash for Parasite, The Farewell, and Pain and Glory all released in 2019, and Minari in 2020 as it did not meet the former requirement for the aforementioned categories that it must have “more than 50 percent non-English dialogue.”

HFPA also said that the organization hired advisors for diversity, equity, and inclusion and that most of its members have already completed training sessions for it.

Further organizational changes include the passing of a revised code of ethical conduct prohibiting the acceptance of gifts and other inducements and establishing a hotline for any reports.

Other amendments in eligibility rules include as stated in the press release:

  • Renaming "Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language" award to "Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language."
  • Productions of stage plays, operas, concerts, and other live events recorded on a theatrical stage or other similar venue (i.e. not adapted for production as a motion picture or television program) are now considered documentaries and are not eligible.
  • Refining the definition of foreign television programs (programs produced principally outside the United States) which are eligible only if they are a co-production (both financially and creatively) with a United States partner and defined a "United States partner."
  • Requiring that all eligible episodes of television series must be a minimum of twenty (20) program minutes.
  • Updating the Golden Globe ballot certifications each member makes to comply with HFPA's current conflicts disclosure requirements.
