YouTube is introducing handles—here's how you can choose yours

Just like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, YouTube is finally rolling out handles to help its users maintain their presence on the video platform.

For the non-tech savvy, handles are usually indicated by an @ sign followed by a name or nickname. Unlike displayed names, handles are more unique as no two users have the same one. This will help other users in the app find you easier, too.

The new handle will be part of your channel URL, so it will show up like youtube.com/@user123. In addition, your handle will be displayed in YouTube Shorts and searches, and it will allow others to tag you in videos. You can also use your handle link on your other social media pages.

YouTube is still gradually rolling out the ability to let people choose their handles, but you'll be able to choose yours as soon as you receive an email from the YouTube team.

Those who already have a personalized URL for their channel will get that username automatically reserved as their default handle.

Once you do get the email and notification from YouTube Studio, here's what you'll need to do:

  • Click on the blue Choose a Handle button
  • Once you're taken to the page, type in your preferred handle (you can choose up to 30 characters and use numbers, underscores, or periods)
  • To save changes, click on Confirm Selection

YouTube also notes that your preferred handle may be unavailable in some cases, and the system will tell you if it's already taken as you're choosing.
