Seven years after the release of her Girls Like Girls music video, Hayley Kiyoko announced that she's writing a young adult novel based on her hit song.

The music video, which has over 148 million views, is a coming-of-age romance between two young girls, Coley and Sonya. The girls exchange yearning looks and tension-filled touches but alas, Sonya has a boyfriend, who catches them mid-kiss. When the boyfriend began getting violent, the two girls band together to escape him.

Commenters on YouTube credit the song and video to be part of their LGBTQ+ awakening and coming out. They've also said that they want a full-length film on the story of the two protagonists, and now they're getting a book.

And as Kiyoko released more sapphic music, she's been called by fans as pop music's "lesbian Jesus."

"Ever since I released the music video for Girls Like Girls in 2015, it has been a dream of mine to tell the whole story of Coley and Sonya," Kiyoko said. "I am so excited to explore these characters further in a novel—to really get inside their heads and their hearts, and to take readers on their quest for love. I am forever grateful for my fans who continue to champion me and help fuel my passion for storytelling."

The singer-songwriter also celebrated the news on Twitter, adding that the book will be coming out on May 30, 2023 by St. Martin's Publishing Group. The YA novel, also titled Girls Like Girls, is now available for pre-order.

"I've been so overwhelmed by the love and excitement for the Girls Like Girls novel 🥹 the kindness to purchase for others, you are my community I’m so proud of. Thank you! I love you all so much," she wrote.

Making queer-themed music, Hayley Kiyoko has released two studio albums, four extended plays, and 28 singles, including Girls Like Girls, Gravel to Tempo, Feelings, and Expectations.
