No to unsolicited nudes: Meta is working on a feature to protect users from unwanted NSFW pics on Instagram

Ever go through your DMs on Instagram only to find a horndog has sent you an unsolicited d*ck pic? To protect users from these unwanted NSFW photos, Meta is working on a new feature called "Nudity Protection."

The company confirmed the upcoming technology in development with The Verge and said it will work similar to its "Hidden Words" feature, which lets users automatically filter DM requests containing offensive content.

Nudity Protection will cover photos that may contain nudity in chats. The said pictures will stay blurred until you choose to view them.

Although it's still in its early stages, Meta said this tech doesn't enable Instagram to access the photos nor will they be shared with third-party apps.

"We're working closely with experts to ensure these features preserve people's privacy, while giving them control over the messages they receive," Meta spokesperson Liz Fernandez told The Verge.

Earlier in the year, the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that 90% of image-based abuse directed at high-profile women was ignored by the photo-sharing platform.

"There is an epidemic of misogynist abuse taking place in women's DMs. Meta and Instagram must put the rights of women before profit," Imran Ahmed, the campaign group's chief executive, said.
