#FollowFriday: The Filipino animators and illustrators behind #AlabPH
The first collaboration of Animators Philippines 2020 gives us a look at the distinct art styles of 10 Filipino animators and illustrators.
Dubbed #AlabPH, the one-minute, 23-second long video set to Tower of Heaven – Luna Ascension by video game composer flashy goodness follows an epic virtual fight sequence featuring animated characters all drawn by local artists. Check out the awesome video below:

This just proves that there’s no shortage of talent among Pinoy illustrators and animators. For this #FollowFriday edition, we round up the individual local artists who joined this collab video. Gab Madrid
An illustrator and 2D animator based in Quezon City who uses bold lines, and shapes to give life to his creations. “Raised with animated films and TV shows, and still growing old with them,” his artwork is influenced by local and foreign mythology and folklore. Hali Navarro
A Filipino illustrator, character concept artist and 2D Animator who runs the Facebook Page Parisukat Art. He describes himself as a “Travel Photographer by hobby and a Digital Animator by profession.”

Iana1 (Ian Dominic Alejo)
A Bulacan-based Filipino artist and digital animator, Ian Dominic Alejo runs the YouTube channel Iana1 Animation / Mga Bobong Senaryo. He describes himself as an “Animator for Fun” on his Facebook page which currently has over 34,000 followers. His YouTube channel contains some of his collaborations, commissioned work and personal projects including this cool animation tribute to Modern-day Heroes (COVID-19 vs. Frontliners).

Pap Zi
Pap Zi is a Filipino visual artist who dabbles in animation and gameplay. The artist’s YouTube Channel features videos and some sample work including a recently uploaded Among Us Animation.

Tarantadong Kalbo
Tarantadong Kalbo is the moniker of Kevin Eric Raymundo, a Cainta-based animator, graphic artist and cinephile. The Pinoy web comic page, which was just launched in July 2019, has gained a large following of 80,0000 fans mainly because of the brilliant satirical comics on the life and everyday frustrations of Filipinos. Aside from the funny caricatures on various topics Pinoys can relate to, his latest illustrations deal with the current political issues, the country, and government mishaps in a very blunt but humorous manner.

James Salenga

Leo Ruin
A Filipino artist and member of WhiteFang Animations, a local studio that aims to produce world-class animations. The studio recently brought the fan-made series Combatron – based on Pilipino FUNNY Komiks – to life. The channel’s first video features some animation work done for Anitu, based on an original Pinoy comic book series of the same name published by Viva Books.

Jason Manguera
A Quezon City based artist and musician who shares videos on the YouTube Channel Jason TV.

Mervin Malonzo
A Filipino artist who created the National Book Award-winning comic Tabi Po. Malonzo is the co-founder of Haliya Publishing, an independent and artist-centric komix house. He also worked with writer Adam David on another title called Ang Subersibo, a comic adaptation of Rizal’s Noli and Fili. He graduated magna cum laude in UP Fine Arts. When he is not creating comics, he’s creating websites, animations, and illustrations for other people and entities. Check out his amazing animation work on Ella Arcangel, based on the comic by Julius Villanuneva, which covers a series of stories of humans and monsters struggling for survival in the big city.
