New movies coming to Philippine cinemas this July

By John Patrick Magno Ranara Published Jul 01, 2022 11:20 am Updated Jul 11, 2022 2:20 pm

The month of June ended on a high note with the release of Everything Everywhere All at Once in Philippine cinemas. One of Hollywood's recent and most talked-about cinematic works, the film has been acclaimed by numerous critics, praising its story, visuals, and acting.

So what's the next big movie for cinema goers this month of July?

Perhaps the obvious contender for the blockbuster title is Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel's newest addition to its superhero film collection. Chris Hemsworth, who plays as the titular god of thunder, is joined by new and returning stars such as Tessa Thompson, Christian Bale, Taika Waititi, and Russel Crowe.

More importantly, it marks the return of Natalie Portman as Thor's girlfriend-turned-ex Jane Foster, who was absent from Thor: Ragnarok.

The Guardians of the Galaxy also make an appearance, with Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper reprising their characters.

If you're looking for a movie to take the kids to this month, there's the animated film DC League of Super-Pets, which puts the spotlight on the cute and heroic pets of Superman and Batman.

Here are some films that will be showing on the big screen for this month of July 2022. Release dates below may still subject to change.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Release date: July 6

After his clash with Thanos and his army, the fourth entry of Thor's story follows the Asgardian hero on a quest to find inner peace. However, his retirement may still be out of reach as he faces another powerful adversary in the form of a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Bale), who wants to end the lives of all of the gods.

But no man is an island, not even a god, so Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi), and Jane (Portman) to stop this unspeakable evil. But to his surprise, his former lover is no longer just an ordinary astrophysicist, but is now the Mighty Thor, gaining powers just like him by wielding his magical hammer Mjolnir.

Together, they strive to stop Gorr from enacting the extinction of the gods before it's too late.

Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021

Release Date: July 13

If you're missing a certain blue robotic cat who has helped shape your childhood with his futuristic gadgets, then worry no more as he is returning to the big screens with a new movie.

Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021 may be the 41st film in the Doraemon franchise, but it is actually just a remake of the epic space opera film of the same name released way back in 1985. But in case you missed the original in theaters, here's your chance to watch it with improved visuals and animation.

The film is about Nobita picking up a small rocket from which a small-sized humanoid alien Papi comes out. The alien explains that he came from the planet named "Pirika" and that he arrived on Earth to escape from the PCIA army of his planet. However, after the battleship who chased Papi arrives on Earth and attacks everyone, Doraemon, Nobita, and their friends embark on a grand space adventure to protect Papi and his planet.

The Black Phone

Release date: July 20 (with sneak peeks on July 11 & 12)

Director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange) returns to his terror roots by partnering again with Blumhouse for a new horror thriller The Black Phone.

The movie focuses on Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney. The horror movie stars Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke and introduces newcomer Mason Thames in his first ever film role.

Released by Universal Pictures International, sneak previews for The Black Phone will be available in select cinemas nationwide on July 11 and 12 before its release in cinemas on July 20.

SLR

Release date: July 27

Thailand has often supplied the world with spine-chilling horror films because of their rich culture and folklore revolving around vengeful spirits and black magic. Now, they're taking a harmless camera and turning it into a source of scares and frights with the film SLR.

The story follows a photography student named Dan (Korapat Kirdpan) who has been struggling with his thesis. After being lended an SLR camera by his lecturer, he discovers that it has a deadly and mysterious dark power that results in anyone who gets their photo taken meeting their tragic demise. Dan must now choose whether to obey it or destroy the malevolent force before it takes the lives of many others.

Directed by Lertsiri Boonmee and Vutichai Wongnophadol, SLR also stars Cherprang Areekul and Sadanont Durongkaweroj. Check movie schedule here.

DC League of Super-Pets

Release Date: July 27

DC League of Super-Pets is another superhero film to look out for, but as you might've guessed, instead of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, it's their loyal, furry companions who will save the day.

Dwayne Johnson lends his voice as the lead character, Krypto the Super-Dog. He is the Man of Steel's pet and life-long best friend, sharing the same superpowers as him as they keep Metropolis safe from crimes and wrongdoings.

However, Superman's archenemy, Lex Luthor, manages to kidnap him and the rest of the Justice League. Krypto must now gather and train Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle, and Chip the squirrel—a group of shelter animals who received their own superpowers—to help him rescue the Justice League.

Along with Johnson, the film features the voices of Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves.

As we've seen throughout the past few months, movie release dates in the Philippines are still subject to last-minute changes. We'll update this list as soon as new movies are confirmed for release in local cinemas.
