PlayStation 5 may be in limited supply at launch - report

We’re all stoked with the much-awaited release of the PlayStation 5 following the unveiling of its potent specs and two-toned DualSense controller.

However, it seems that not everyone will be able to get their hands on Sony’s next-generation console as it may be in limited supply once it finally hit shelves later this year.

Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg reported that Sony is planning to release limited units of PS5 as the company anticipates lower demand because of the console’s high price tag.

The report claimed that the Tokyo-based company would only make “5 to 6 million units of the PS5 in the fiscal year ending March 2021.” In comparison, Sony sold 7.5 million units of PS4 during the first two quarters in 2013.

Meanwhile, the report also claimed that the company will be relying on its PS4 variants “as a bridge to get new users” while the next-generation console is in short supply. It also said that the company may also slash the prices of the PS4 models during the PS5 launch “to stimulate new subscribers for the PlayStation Plus membership program and PlayStation Now game-streaming service.”

However, nothing is certain in relation to the launch of Sony’s newest offering as Bloomberg reported that the production volume of PS5 “could still change” depending on the COVID-19 situation that’s grappling most of the countries across the globe. Despite the limited supply of the long-awaited console, however, the report said that the Tokyo tech company “remains unlikely” to delay the PS5 launch, which is expected to hit the market by holiday 2020.

The PS5 will feature a custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 GPU with ray tracing as well as an ultra-high speed SSD for faster loading screens.
