‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ drops first trailer and release date

The first official trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage dropped Monday (May 10), giving fans a look at the symbiote anti-hero's second adventure.

Tom Hardy returns to the big screen in the Sony-Marvel film as the lethal protector Venom, based on one of Marvel comic’s greatest and most complex characters.

Following directly from the 2018 original's post-credits scene, the sequel will pit Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) against Carnage, a combination of Venom's spawn and the serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). The film directed by Andy Serkis is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and Tencent Pictures.

The film also stars Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, a district attorney and Eddie's ex-fiancée as well as Naomie Harris as Frances Barrison a.k.a Shriek, Kasady's love interest in the comics.

Despite obvious ties to the comic book character of Spider-Man, director Andy Serkis said that the 'Venom 2' characters are 'unaware' of Spider-Man and that the film exists in its own Sony micro-verse. 

However, the trailer did drop a little Easter egg that connects Venom 2 to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie trilogy which starred Tobey Maguire as the webslinger. 

Eagle-eyed fans spotted a policeman character played by Stephen Graham reading the Daily Bugle newspaper designed to be a mirror image of the Daily Bugle papers that characters were seen reading in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Universe.
