It's June 12, and you know what that means: The Philippine Independence Day and what has now become a yearly tradition, #RP612fic.

Started in 2009 by fiction writer Paolo Chikiamco, the hashtag #RP612fic, or “Republic of the Philippines June 12 fiction,” is a collection of memes created by netizens as a way of retelling our country's rich history through pop culture. Since then, people in the Twitterverse have provided their entries, and became a source of entertainment for many.

In 2017, the original creator of the hashtag said he will "step away from it" and "won't be participating" anymore.

"This isn't meant to be a statement about the hashtag. It's more popular than I'd ever dreamed it would be & I'm quite happy to enjoy it as the meme generator it's evolved into," he tweeted. "But I've too much on my plate at the moment + want to engage w/ nationalism and identity in a nonfictional way," he added.

"This isn't meant to surrender the "speculative" to those who'd use it as a tool of oppression. Fiction & Spec Fic especially remain a powerful tool for empowerment and representation - or necessary escape - whether in tweets or novels," Chikiamco wrote.

Nevertheless, he still hopes that the Independence Day will remind everyone of "the existence and complexities of past triumphs, both earned and inherited."

Even though Chikiamco has stopped participating, his #RP612fic legacy lives on. And now, to celebrate our 123rd Philippine Independence Day, allow us to share the funniest #RP612fic posts we came across this year.
