Get ready for an epic monster mash!

While most blockbuster movies have been pushed back or delayed due to the pandemic, in a surprising move, Warner Bros. has decided to bump up Godzilla vs. Kong two months earlier than expected.

The legendary beasts will now face off in theaters and simultaneously on HBO Max on March 26 instead of May 21, 2021 as previously reported.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Legendary Entertainment, the production company that financed Godzilla vs. Kong, recently engaged in a public spat with Warner Bros., threatening to take legal action over the studio’s decision to send its 2021 movies to HBO Max on the same day they debut in theaters.

According to sources, Warner Bros. reportedly blocked Netflix’s $250 million bid to buy the monster movie. However, Legendary and Warner have since reached a deal and release strategy to go forward as planned.

Despite the earlier-than-expected release date, no official trailer has yet been released except for brief glimpses seen in HBO’s latest sizzle reel featuring their same day release strategy released Saturday (Jan. 16).

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth entry in Legendary’s monster universe following Godzilla (2004), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).

The upcoming crossover monster flick directed by Adam Wingard (Blair Witch, Death Note) starring Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry, pits two of the most iconic beasts in the world of comics, television and film against each other in an epic showdown. Here's the synopsis of the film as previously reported.

"In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will set the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titan’s origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the Earth forever."

After being shuffled around the calendar several times before, Godzilla vs. Kong is now scheduled to be released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max on March 26, 2021.
