Behind-the-scenes look at ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

Shazam! Fury of the Gods dropped a behind-the-scenes look during Satuday’s DC FanDome event, teasing upgraded suits, mythological creatures, bigger action sequences and new villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.

Almost everybody from the original Shazam (2019) is back in the sequel ready to channel Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

While no plot details for Fury of the Gods has been released, it will presumably pick up where the original film left off, with Batson’s foster family now all wielding the power to transform into superheroes.

Zachary Levi returns as the titular hero alongside teenager Asher Angel as his non-superhero personality Billy Batson. Angel appeared in the DC FanDome virtual event to introduce the segment, before getting struck with a bolt of lightning and transforming into Levi as soon as he said the film's title.

The extended Batson family includes Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, and Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, along with their Shazam-ed personas (in the same order) Adam Brody, Meagan Good, Ross Butler, D.J. Cortona, and Fulton (doing double-duty as her superhero counterpart, a role previously played by Michelle Borth).

This time around the Shazam supes will be facing off against new villains, the daughters of Greek god Atlas. The goddesses who have come to the realm include Hespera played by Helen Mirren and Kalyspo played by Charlie’s Angels Lucy Liu, who were featured in full costume in the clip.

The sequel is also adding mythological creatures and monsters like minotaurs, harpies and dragons to the mix, as well as a trip to the Olympus-like Realm of the Gods.

“We go from Athens to Philadelphia, the Rock of Eternity and the Library of Eternity to the Realm of the Gods. So we get to go to environments we never got to explore in the first film,” said producer Peter Safran. “Shazam Fury of the Gods takes the excitement and action to a whole new level.”

Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews also return as their foster parents Rosa and Victor Vásquez, and Djimon Hounsou as the wizard Shazam. David F. Sandberg is also coming back to direct the sequel after a successful origin movie.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled for release on June 2, 2023.
