Weekend Watchlist: What to watch this Chinese New Year and Valentine's weekend

This coming weekend marks two auspicious events: The Lunar New Year, the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, and Valentine's Day, typically linked to the public display of romance and love in many regions of the world. 

While festivities may be muted due to the ongoing pandemic and romantic movie dates in theaters are still restricted in the metro, you can still enjoy family bonding and dates at home by getting special themed food delivered and catching up on your favorite rom-coms, movies, or K-drama series from streaming sites.

Not a fan of love stories? You can still enjoy some good old-fashioned demon-hunting shows or crime thrillers like The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.

Here are some of the latest offerings on Netflix you might want to catch up on this long weekend.

The Yin-Yang Master

Synopsis: When a demonic serpent reawakens, the Yin-Yang Masters must solve a murder mystery and protect their realms from a dark conspiracy at the royal court. 

To All the Boys: Always and Forever

Synopsis: Senior year of high school takes center stage as Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) returns from a family trip to Korea and considers her college plans—with and without Peter (Noah Centineo).

Valentine's Day

Synopsis: The tripwires of modern love are exposed in a carousel involving relationships and the single life on the most romantic day of the year: February 14. The 2010 romantic comedy film features an ensemble cast including Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts, and Taylor Swift in her film debut. 

Squared Love

Synopsis: A celebrity journalist and renowned womanizer starts to rethinking his life choices after he falls for a mysterious model who leads a double life. The 2021 Polish comedy film stars Miroslaw Baka, Mateusz Banasiuk and Adrianna Chlebicka.

Malcolm and Marie

Synopsis: When filmmaker Malcolm (John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya), return home from a movie premiere and await his film’s critical response, the evening takes a turn as revelations about their relationship surface, testing the couple’s love.

Mary, Queen of Scots

Synopsis: A young Queen Mary (Saoirse Ronan) returns to her native Scotland and battles her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), for the throne of England.

A Love So Beautiful

Synopsis: Love is as tough as it is sweet for a lovestruck teenager, whose relationship with her next door nighbor transforms as they grow into adulthood.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Season 7)

Synopsis: The hilarious heroics of New York's funniest police precinct continue in the seventh season. SNL alum Andy Samberg and Emmy winner Andre Braugher lead this diverse, critically acclaimed ensemble that solves crimes like only they can—with tons of humor and the heart to match.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

Synopsis: The notorious Cecil Hotel grows in infamy when guest Elisa Lam vanishes. From the creator of "The Ted Bundy Tapes."

The Uncanny Counter

Synopsis: When an average high-schooler gets a taste of the afterlife, he’s asked to join a mysterious group that calls themselves Counters, and somehow ends up the newest recruit on a team of soul-collecting demon hunters.

Flower of Evil

Synopsis: romance crime thriller about an emotionless psychopath (Lee Joon Gi) who changes his identity and tries to leave his dark past behind him that marries a homicide detective (Moon Chae Won) who is trying to uncover the truth about him.

Foolish Love

Synopsis: Fearing she'll end up perpetually alone, Virgie sets out to locate her long-lost childhood crush who she believes is her destined match. The Filipino film directed by Joel Lamangan stars Angeline Quinto, Jake Cuenca, Miho Nishida and Tommy Esguerra.

The Annulment

Synopsis: Two strangers from different worlds fall in love and get married untiil familial pressures and personal failures begin to test their relationship.

Nadiya Bakes

Synopsis: Delightful cakes and heavenly breads pop from the oven as Nadiya Hussain returns to baking, her happy place, and spotlights creative kindred spirits.
