Adele wins big at first Brit Awards with mixed gender categories; full list of winners

British singer-songwriter Adele didn’t go easy on us all when she picked up two major awards at this year’s Brit Awards.

Thanks to her latest album 30, the power belter won three out of four nominations: Artist of the Year, Mastercard album of the year, and song of the year for Easy on Me. Her nod for best pop/rock act – an award determined by fan voting – was snagged by Dua Lipa.

Prior to this year’s Brits, Adele has also often won these major categories as well, with her Album of the Year wins in 2012 and 2016 for her sophomore album 21 and her third studio album 25, respectively. Her third win for the category makes her the first solo act to achieve a record number of wins for Album of the Year.

With Song of the Year, Adele won in 2013 for the James Bond film song Skyfall and in 2016 for chart-topping hit Hello.

When she went on to receive the Album of the Year award, the British singer-songwriter dedicated her victory to son Angelo and ex-husband Simon Konecki, who have been the subject of the songs she had written for the album.

“This album was all of our journey, not just mine, and I’m very proud of myself for sticking to my guns and putting out an album that was so personal to me – ’cause not many people do that any more. My son has been so kind and gracious and patient with me over the years,” Adele said.

This year’s Brit Awards is the first in the award show’s history to mix males and females in all its existing categories. In this newly minted format, female acts have dominated the awards.

Other key categories such as Group of the Year, Best New Artist, International Artist of the Year, and International Song of the Year have been won by women or female-fronted acts. Wolf Alice took home Group of the Year, British rapper Little Simz won Best New Artist, and Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Good 4 U’ bested 14 other nominees.
