Netflix has released a teaser trailer and posters for new South Korean sci-fi thriller series, The Silent Sea, set to premiere on Christmas Eve.

The series, which stars Train to Busan’s Gong Yoo, Kingdom’s Bae Doona, and Lee Joon, former member of South Korean boy band MBLAQ, is described as a “suspenseful sci-fi mystery set on a lunar base.”

The upcoming series is an adaptation of the 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquility written and directed by Choi Hang-yong who returns to direct the series.

The title is said to be a reference to the Sea of Tranquility, where Apollo 11 first landed in 1969.

Gong Yoo stars as Han Yoon-jae, the exploration team leader who must carry out a crucial mission with limited information. He puts the safety of his team members above all else and does not refrain from putting himself in jeopardy to do so.

Bae Doona portrays astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-an, who joins the team in order to uncover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae Base research station on the moon.

Lee Joon plays head engineer Captain Ryoo Tae-seok, an elite member of the Ministry of National Defense who volunteered for this dangerous mission in an attempt to escape the stifling environment at the Ministry.

The series supporting cast also includes Kim Sun-young, Lee Mu-saeng, and Lee Sung-wook.

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

An abandoned lunar base. A mission with a 10 percent survival rate. One by one, crew members end up dead. Set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification, The Silent Sea is the story of the members of a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon.

All eight episodes of The Silent Sea will debut on Netflix on Dec. 24, 2021.
