Toei Animation has officially confirmed that a new Dragon Ball Super movie will be released in 2022.

The upcoming sequel to 2018's massively successful Dragon Ball Super: Broly will be the second film based on the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime series, which premiered in 2015.

Although the film's plot details are still being kept under wraps, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama revealed that just like in the first film, he is also taking the lead on the sequel’s story and dialogue production.

"I really shouldn't talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character," Toriyama said. "We'll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie."

The company revealed that plans for the movie sequel started in 2018, right before the premiere of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which earned over $120 million in worldwide box office.

Toei said that the sequel aims to tell "a large-scale story that would build on the enthusiastic response for the previous theatrical series and the current global fervor for Broly."

"Akira Toriyama himself has picked up his pen to deliver a fascinating story that fans desire. From the magnificent story composition to character design to the lines of the script, Toriyama has worked passionately with the greatest attention to detail and highest quality standards—creating a Dragon Ball movie unlike any other in its history and one that will surely be a blockbuster with fans," Toei added.

Toriyama's popular manga first debuted in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984 and eventually became a top ranked title throughout its 10 and a half years of publication. Now, nearly 40 decades later, the original manga has already sold 260 million copies worldwide.
