In celebration of Rocket League’s fifth anniversary, game developer Psyonix has announced that its widely-popular car-soccer game will soon become free-to-play on all platforms.

In the announcement, Psyonix said that the next chapter of Rocket League will feature improved tournaments and challenges as well as cross-platform progression. This means that players will be able to bring their competitive rank, items in their inventory as well as Rocket Pass to any platform using an Epic Games Account.

For those who have played Rocket League prior to its free-to-play launch, they will be rewarded with a ‘Legacy’ status which includes all of the game’s previous downloadable content, “Est. 20XX” title that displays the year when the player first started playing the game, 200+ common items upgraded to ‘Legacy’ quality, Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels and a Huntress player banner. Additionally, anyone who played online before the announcement will also receive the Faded Cosmos Boost.

Following the switch to the Epic Games Store, Psyonix said that the Steam version of Rocket League will no longer be available to new players. However, the developer noted that anyone who has an existing version of Rocket League on Steam will still be able to play the game including future updates and features.

As of now, Psyonix hasn’t mentioned a specific date for the game's release, but said that the car-soccer game will be available later this summer. With that in mind, we may have to wait a few more weeks for the free-to-play version of Rocket League.
