Hit or miss: The best and worst-dressed celebrities at the Oscars 2023

Celebrities often take advantage of award shows to flaunt their stylish and eye-catching outfits, and one of the biggest of them is the Academy Awards.

This is kind of a double-edged sword, however, as one wrong accessory or clothing can lead them to become the talk of the town among the viewers, and not in a good way.

At the recently concluded 95th Academy Awards, Hollywood's A-listers graced the Dolby Theater with their elegant dresses that are brimming with luxury and beauty. However, there were some whose unconventional ensemble managed to catch the attention of the public. Here are some of the best and worst outfits at the show:

Hunter Schafer, who is most known for her role as a transgender high school student in the teen drama series Euphoria, turned heads because of her daring Ann Demeulemeester top composed of only a single white feather that she wore as a bra with a sleek strap, baring nearly everything out in the open.

She complimented the top with a silky white low-rise skirt and various silver rings. Her outfit definitely took the phrase "light as a feather" to a whole new meaning but garnered mixed reactions from fashion experts and people online.

Vogue Magazine's Ana Eksouzian-Cavadas described the ensemble as "beautifully minimal and ethereal as ever," while many netizens over at Twitter said it was "awkward and uncomfortable" and "not appropriate for an awards show" because Hunter was "practically naked."

Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems is perhaps one of the more noticeable ensembles in the awards show, consisting of a white dress with fabric strips that curved up through her body and around her head, seemingly frozen in space. The Lever Couture dress was so massive that its ends even spilled over into the surrounding seats.

While her ouftit certainly has a magical and fantastical aura to it, it ultimately didn't stick the landing as she received quite an earful from Twitter users after they scolded her for blocking the view of the people sitting behind her.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh gained prominence for her effective acting skills in films such as Midsommar, Little Women, and Black Widow, but it looks like she didn't channel the same effectiveness with what she wore during the Oscars.

For the award show, she chose to come in an off-shoulder grey high-low gown from Valentino Couture that many pointed out looked like a bunch of wrinkly bed sheets. Underneath the thick layer of fabric, Pugh wore black shorts that were complete with pockets.

It's rare to see a man wearing a peach pink tuxedo, and a satin one at that. Moana star Dwayne Johnson has shown everybody just why at the recent Academy Awards.

Dwayne attended the show in his Dolce & Gabbana suit jacket that he adorned with a flower which, according to Insider, honored his daughters Simone, Jasmine, and Tiana. While the look definitely made a statement, his suit drew backlash from some fashion critics as its fabric made the piece look heavily wrinkled in photos.

Kate Hudson was shining, shimmering, splendid as she stepped into the Oscars red carpet in her bedazzled mermaid gown by Rodarte, which featured a strappy neckline, draping off-the-shoulder sleeves, and a long tail.

The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star sparkled from head to toe, as she matched her gown with teardrop earrings by Rahaminov Diamonds. Her light makeup and bombshell waves made the entire look even more regal.

Michelle Williams looked like a goddess that fell from the sky with her white Chanel gown with a shimmering cape made of silk-chiffon, cadi, and Tulli, embroidered with silver and white sequins, strass crystals, and pearls.

According to Vogue, the dress took over 900 hours to craft, which is only fitting that it turned out to be one of the standout ensembles that managed to enchant the eyes of the audience with its ethereal aura.

Rihanna and Lady Gaga

Moving on to the more exceptional outfits, Rihanna and Lady Gaga managed to hit their mark and garner a perfect score with their sheer black dresses.

The soft sheer fabric softened the starkness of the gown's color, as seen on Lady Gaga’s boned Atelier Versace gown with ’50s bullet bra top contrasted with a voluminous skirt. The same goes for Rihanna’s Alaïa piece that had leather mixed with the sheer for a soft-hard edge mix to show off her baby bump.

An awards show as grand as the Oscars is also the perfect time to go big. Among the celebrities who added a whimsical twist to the adage "the more the merrier" Cara Delevingne who went with a red one-sided gown with a sumptuous skirt and matching huge bow wrapped up on the shoulder. Allison Williams did just the same in her oversized pink opera coat worn over a floral-jeweled dress with feathered hem.
