Frankie Pangilinan gifts mom Sharon Cuneta a self-composed song, 'Megastar (Interlude)'
Sharon Cuneta dropped a new song dubbed Megastar (Interlude) in collaboration with Kindred band—and it was written by her daughter, Frankie Pangilinan.
Frankie announced that the new track is now on YouTube in a lengthy post on Thursday, Sept. 28, where she detailed the song's backstory and described it as a “full circle moment” from how she used to watch her mom during her glory days as a musician to actually collaborating with her on a project.
“[I] grew up watching mom through the window-slices of recording studios. [S]he’d bring me to work and [I]’d stand on barstools or vinyl couches just to catch a glimpse of her going through lyric pages in cold, shadowy vocal booths,” she recalled. “[A]nd at the age of twenty-two, for the very first time, [I] took my mommy to work with me.”
Frankie went on to share that since her mom never held any record of hers, she decided to gift her a self-composed song connected to her iconic song Mr. DJ. It's an interlude to Kindred’s Lambing ng Megastar song, which features rising musician and rapper Kiyo. The music video shows a Pinoy heroine Darna portrayed by drag queen Viñas Deluxe as a reference to Sharon’s iconic role in the '80s film.
“[I]t opens with ‘maybe the DJ’s gone…’ which is obviously referential to [R]ey [V]alera and his song about a love so deep it transcends all manners of space, connecting people through the buzz of flimsy radio waves,” Frankie wrote.
“[N]ow that 45 years have passed, the challenge was to write something about the same love only older, aged. [C]ould it transcend time as well? [I]f you listen closely, you can hear [Miel Pangilinan] and I singing with mommy in the distant background. [W]e’re there as markers of the present,” she continued, and then expressed further gratitude and appreciation to her mom, whom she calls her best friend.
“[Sharon Cuneta], you have earned your rest, mama ko. [T]hank you for loving my friends without condition and thank you for singing my best effort at writing in your voice. [I] can’t believe you’re my best friend!” she said.
Frankie is Sharon's second child with her husband, public servant Kiko Pangilinan. The married couple shares two other children named Miel and Miguel.
In August, Sharon penned a sweet appreciation post to Frankie when she moved back to the U.S. for her studies, taking pride in how the latter has been a good daughter and a reliable sister to her siblings.
“No headaches, no horror stories, no disrespect, no bad or sad anything?! I must have done something right in my lifetime. Thank you, my Kakie. My girl. My Ate,” the Megastar wrote on Instagram.
“I cannot live without you. I love you with all of my heart. Thank you for being a good daughter. Thank you for loving me.️ I miss you terribly already,” she continued.
