#FangirlGuide: Songs you probably didn't know that are self-produced by (G)I-DLE

(G)I-DLE is a true gem in the K-pop industry, and its not only because of their euphonious voices, amazing dancing skills, and their ravishing looks, but they are also gifted with a talent in creating music.

While it's rare for K-pop groups to produce their own music, (G)I-DLE, composed of Soyeon, Minnie, Yuqi, Miyeon, and Shuhua, is one of the few who does so.

In an interview with Refinery 29, the group's leader Soyeon said that writing lyrics is enjoyable and that she hopes more women get to produce more music.

“I don’t really get why [female producers are] so rare. Because it is really fun. The reason why we make our own music is because we simply really want to do it. I do hope there is an increase in women who self-produce,” she said.

“We make music that we want to make, and we really enjoy it, so we’re going to continue to follow that instinct. We don’t care,” she added.

That said, allow us to list down some of the group’s self-produced songs in anticipation for their upcoming 'Just Me ( )IDLE' world tour concert in Manila.

Latata

Did you know that (G)I-DLE's debut song from their first mini album, I Am, was written by Soyeon? Since its release, Latata has won a series of awards. Soyeon even told Indian entertainment television channel Zoom that because of the success of the song, it has put more pressure on her to write better songs.

"LATATA is the song that has always put pressure on me. So everytime I make a new song, I wonder, ‘Is this new song better than “LATATA”?’" she shared.

HWAA

Who wouldn't be LSS with this song? From a slow start showcasing the members vocals with great instrumental, HWAA is one of the group’s popular songs because of its upbeat tempo. It's also written by Soyeon.

Lost

Yeah, we surely feel lost because of (G)I-DLE’s vocal and rap skills. Lost is an R&B song that talks about missing someone after a break-up. When you listen to its lyrics, you can feel the member’s strong emotions, as if they are experiencing an emotional heartbreak. This song was written by Yuqi, the group’s lead dancer and visuals.

Dahlia

In this song, main vocalist Minnie likens attraction and greed towards a person to the flower dahlia, a type of flower that is associated with love and romance.

Moon

Moon is a song composed by Minnie and written by Soyeon from their 2021 album I burn. The poetry-like lyrics about wanting to stay hidden in the darkness surprisingly matches its catchy and danceable rhythm.
