Chris Brown, Charli XCX, Grimes criticize Grammys 2023 results

The Grammys, considered as the most prestigious award in the music industry worldwide, just unveiled this year's winners across several categories at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 6, Manila time. Some artists, however, weren't pleased with the outcome.

R&B singer Chris Brown ranted in a series of Instagram Stories after his Breezy (Deluxe) lost best R&B album to Robert Glasper's Black Radio III.

“BRO WHO THE F–K IS THIS?” Chris said of Robert, sharing a screenshot of the latter's Google search result that describes him as an "American pianist, record producer, songwriter and musical arranger with a career that bridges several different musical and artistic genres.”

Chris, then, went on to insult Robert, saying: “YALL PLAYING. WHO DA F–K IS THIS?” “Ima keep kicking y’all ass! Respectfully.”

The With You singer also told the American musician to “get [his] skills up” and “start playing the harmonica.”

He has since apologized to Robert for the online tantrum.

“Congratulations my brother… I would like to apologize if you took offense to my reaction at the Grammys. You were not the intended target and I know I came off really rude and mean," Chris told Robert in a direct message, as posted in another Instagram Story.

He then pinned the blame on organizers for not doing people of color "due diligence."

"You and I should never be in the same category… two totally different vibes and genres. So from one Black man to another, congratulations. Hope you are able to feed your family for life. God bless my G," he said.

Electropop artist Charli XCX, meanwhile, lamented how her studio album CRASH and its tracks weren't nominated in any category at all.

She posted a fierce selfie on Instagram, saying not being nominated for a Grammy is like English actress Mia Goth not being nominated for the slasher film Pearl at the Academy Awards or Oscars.

"[It] only further proves that people don’t wanna see hot evil girls thrive," Charli XCX said.

Industry colleague Grimes expressed her support for Charli XCX, commenting that the Grammys is "so irrelevant" that she wouldn't "even sweat it."

"I stopped even clocking them in any capacity," Grimes said, adding that when she was on the producer of the year board, officials allegedly didn't allow her to nominate "anyone who wasn’t on a pre fabricated list that was exceptionally boring."

Grimes also claimed to be one of the board's three women, and the only one under 40 at that.

"It’s literally not a relevant thing. I tried to nominate Sophie and was told that wasn’t allowed," she said of the Scottish music producer who also worked with Charli XCX.

The recently concluded 65th Grammy Awards was a night filled with epic moments including the awarding of the inagural Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music, and the historical wins of Beyonce, Viola Davis, and more.
